Calgary Tree Works handles tree removal across all Calgary neighborhoods, from small ornamental trees in tight backyards to large mature trees in established communities.
When Does a Tree Actually Need to Come Down?
In some situations, we need to remove the tree ASAP, but not each time.
We get called for:
- Dead or dying trees that have become unstable.
- Storm damaged trees with a cracked trunk or majorly broken limbs.
- Trees leaning toward a structure, vehicle or power line.
- Severe trunk decay or fungal infection that treatment will not fix.
- Trees causing foundation damage, sidewalk damage or sewer problems.
- Clearing for a construction project, new garage or fence line.
- Removing invasive species such as Manitoba maple and Siberian elm.
You do not need to spend money quickly when you are not sure whether removing a tree is right for you. We can do a tree health assessment first, then we will tell you about the unnecessary things about the removal of the tree.

Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Calgary?
In most cases on private residential property, no permit is required. There are exceptions worth knowing:
- Trees in a City designated Riparian Reserve require approval before removal.
- Elm trees require careful handling during the April 1 to September 30 pruning ban for DED management.
- Heritage district properties or lots with tree protection conditions in their development permits may be subject to restrictions.
- Work near overhead power lines has to be coordinated with ENMAX, regardless of permit status.
We go over all of this at the assessment stage and handle ENMAX coordination when required.
