What Counts as a Tree Emergency?

  • A tree or large branch has fallen onto a structure, vehicle or fence.
  • A tree is leaning at a severe angle after wind or root failure.
  • A large partially broken branch is hanging over a roof, walkway or yard (widow-maker)
  • Storm debris is blocking access to your property or a public road.
  • A tree has made contact with power lines. Call ENMAX first at 403-310-2010, then us.
  • Root heave has destabilized a tree overnight after rain or a freeze-thaw cycle.
If a tree is touching power lines, keep everyone away from the area and call ENMAX before calling any tree company. We coordinate with ENMAX on power line adjacent emergency removals, but they must make the line safe before we can work near it.

Why Calgary Gets So Many Emergency Tree Calls

Chinook events: Rapid warming in late winter saturates the soil quickly and strips away root anchorage. Trees that held all winter can fail within hours. We see a spike in emergency calls every time a strong Chinook hits.
Late spring heavy snow: Calgary regularly gets wet, heavy snow in April and May, after trees have leafed out. The weight of wet snow on a full canopy is dramatically higher than winter snow on bare branches. Branch failures and whole tree collapses follow almost every significant late season snowfall.
Summer hailstorms and straight line winds: Alberta is one of Canada’s most hail active regions. Large hail weakens branch attachment points and the straight line winds that accompany these storms regularly knock over shallow rooted trees. Poplar and older spruce are the most common casualties.

Emergency pricing reflects after hours labor, fast mobilization and the added complexity of working around damaged structures. General ranges:
Emergency call out fee (evenings and weekends) from $150 to $300
Small emergency removal (fallen branch or small tree) from $400 to $900
Medium emergency removal from $900 to $2,000
Large or complex emergency removal from $2,000 to $5,000 and up
Debris clearing from a structure or vehicle costs $300 to $800
Temporary tarping or damage containment from $200 to $500

Most Alberta homeowner policies cover emergency tree removal when a tree has damaged an insured structure.
We provide written invoices, before and after photos and documentation formatted for insurance claim submission.
Check your deductible before calling. If total damage sits below the deductible, paying out of pocket is often simpler.

After the Emergency Is Cleared

Once the immediate hazard is dealt with, we recommend a full assessment of the surrounding trees. Storms rarely hit just one. We check for hidden trunk cracks in neighboring trees, lifted root zones and hanging debris that is not obvious from ground level. What looks stable after a storm may not be.
