Permit Considerations for Land Clearing in Calgary

Clearing work in Calgary can trigger several requirements depending on where the property is and what is on it:
  • Development permits: If clearing ties to a development project, the City may attach tree protection or replacement conditions

 

  • Environmental reserve setbacks: Properties next to ravines, waterways or natural areas are subject to riparian setback rules. No clearing within the protected zone.

 

  • Erosion and sediment control: Construction sites over a certain footprint require an approved ESC plan

 

  • Elm trees: The April 1 to September 30 cutting ban applies to elm trees on clearing projects just as it does on residential lots
We go through all of this at the site assessment stage. We do not clear in protected riparian zones and we will tell you upfront if any part of the planned clearing is restricted.
